What is Heart Failure?
Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle cannot pump enough blood to meet the body needs, leading to fluid accumulation in the lungs and tissues. With appropriate treatment, symptoms can be largely controlled.
Causes
- Coronary artery disease and previous heart attack
- Long-standing hypertension, valve disease and cardiomyopathy
- Arrhythmias, diabetes and obesity
Symptoms
- Breathlessness on exertion or lying flat, nocturnal cough
- Leg, ankle and foot swelling (oedema)
- Palpitations and easy fatigability
Treatment
Diuretics, ACE inhibitors/ARBs/ARNI, beta-blockers and SGLT2 inhibitors are the cornerstones of modern treatment. Regular follow-up reduces hospitalisations and improves quality of life.
