What is Arrhythmia?
Arrhythmia occurs when the cardiac electrical system is disrupted. The heart may beat too fast (tachycardia), too slowly (bradycardia) or irregularly.
Common Arrhythmias
- Atrial fibrillation (AF): Most common sustained arrhythmia; associated with stroke risk.
- SVT: Sudden-onset paroxysmal rapid heartbeat episodes.
- Ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation: Life-threatening; requires immediate intervention.
- Bradycardia: Slow heartbeat causing dizziness and syncope.
Diagnosis and Treatment
ECG and 24-48h Holter monitor for diagnosis. Treatment includes antiarrhythmics, anticoagulation, cardioversion, pacemaker or ablation.
