What is Aortic Insufficiency?
Aortic insufficiency (aortic regurgitation) occurs when the aortic valve fails to close completely, allowing blood to flow back into the left ventricle. This creates volume and pressure overload that can eventually weaken the heart muscle.
Causes
- Rheumatic heart disease, bicuspid aortic valve
- Aortic root dilatation (Marfan syndrome, hypertension)
- Infective endocarditis
Symptoms and Treatment
Mild cases are asymptomatic for years. Advanced disease causes breathlessness, palpitations and fatigue. Mild cases are followed with echocardiography; advanced cases require valve repair or replacement.
