What is Heart Valve Disease?
The heart has four valves ensuring one-directional blood flow. Heart valve disease occurs when any valve develops stenosis (fails to open fully) or regurgitation (fails to close fully).
Stenosis
- Mitral stenosis: Usually after rheumatic fever. Causes breathlessness and palpitations.
- Aortic stenosis: Age-related calcification or bicuspid valve. Causes chest pain, syncope and heart failure.
Regurgitation
May be asymptomatic for years; when it progresses causes fatigue, breathlessness and palpitations.
Treatment
Mild cases are monitored. Advanced cases require valve repair or replacement (including TAVI).
