What is Aortic Disease?
The aorta is the largest artery in the body. Aortic diseases include aneurysm (abnormal widening) and dissection (tearing of the arterial wall layers).
Aortic Aneurysm
Dilation of the aorta beyond 1.5 times its normal diameter. Usually silent; rupture is life-threatening.
Aortic Dissection
Tearing of the inner aortic wall layer. Presents with sudden, severe chest or back pain and requires immediate intervention.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Echocardiography and CT angiography are used. Small aneurysms are monitored regularly; advanced cases require surgery or endovascular stent-grafting.
