What is Peripheral Artery Disease?
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is the narrowing or blockage of arteries — mainly in the legs — due to atherosclerosis. Reduced blood flow causes leg pain or cramping during exercise that is relieved by rest (intermittent claudication).
Symptoms
- Leg pain or cramps during walking, relieved by rest
- Numbness, coldness and colour changes in the legs
- Non-healing wounds or ulcers
Diagnosis and Treatment
Ankle-brachial index (ABI), Doppler ultrasound and CT angiography are used. Treatment includes risk factor control, antiplatelet drugs and, in advanced cases, angioplasty, stent or bypass.
