What is Hypertension?
Hypertension is a persistent elevation of blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg. It is often called the “silent killer” because it usually causes no symptoms, yet can seriously damage the heart, brain and kidneys over time.
Risk Factors
- Family history, high salt intake, sedentary lifestyle and obesity
- Smoking, alcohol use, chronic stress and advancing age
Complications
Uncontrolled hypertension can lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and peripheral artery disease.
Treatment
Treatment includes salt restriction, regular exercise, weight loss, smoking cessation and personalised antihypertensive medication (ACE inhibitors, ARBs, calcium channel blockers, diuretics).
